D’Arcy Smith was teaching a Vocal Combat Class at Rapier Wit, when he was approached by a group of video game actors. They told him how video game sessions were destroying their voices.

He thought…

“I’m already training actors to do vocally extreme work, but this is next level.”

The challenge was not only to create the extreme sounds in the healthiest way possible, but also to make sure the sounds were believable.

So he went back to “the lab” and worked with the Otolaryngology Department at the University of Cincinnati. D’Arcy teamed up with Katelyn Reid, a voice clinician at the Hospital, and ran a few studies to test to make sure Vocal Combat Technique actually did help actors.
